Paracel Laboratories Ltd. is a full-service environmental and Indoor Air Quality laboratory. Our main laboratory facilities are located in Ottawa and are supported by an environmental laboratory in Hamilton, as well as microbiology and asbestos laboratories in Mississauga and Calgary. Additional service depots are located in Kingston, London, Niagara, Windsor, and Richmond Hill.

We support a broad spectrum of projects for professional clients across Canada and around the world. Our client base primarily consists of major environmental consultants, all levels of government, and industrial manufacturers located predominantly in Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara, Eastern Ontario, and Southwestern Ontario.

The Opportunity

Paracel Laboratories is looking for an Asbestos Analyst to join our team in Mississauga. The ideal candidate for this role is detail-oriented, dexterous, and driven to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

The Laboratory Analyst is responsible for the analysis of asbestos using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and/or phase contrast microscopy (PCM). The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Department Supervisor.

This is a full-time, permanent position.

Compensation

This position offers a salary range of $18.50–$21.00 per hour, commensurate with experience. The compensation package includes full benefits, an Employee and Family Assistance Program, a Group RRSP plan, and a Profit-Sharing Program.

Location

This role is on-site, at 6800 Kitimat Road, Unit 15, Mississauga, Ontario, L5N 5M1.
 

Key Responsibilities
  • Preparation and analysis of asbestos air samples using Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM).
  • Preparation, detection, identification, and quantification of materials for asbestos content using visual estimation percentage and properties of asbestos/non-asbestos materials by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM).
  • Preparation of fungal and/or bacterial materials in a Level 2 Biohazard laboratory setting.
  • Extended periods working at the microscope.
  • Extensive use of computers to manage workflow and data entry.
  • Coordination of sample analyses and data review based on priority and turnaround times.
  • Maintenance of Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) programs, adhering to ISO 17025 and Established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Assisting with daily laboratory support, including maintenance, calibration, supply maintenance and cleaning.
  • Working extended hours and weekends, may occasionally be requested.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Geology, Biology, or a related field.
  • Any experience in asbestos characterization by PLM and/or PCM analysis, would be an asset.
  • Superb attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and maintain a high degree of manual dexterity.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to thrive in a team or independently.
  • Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and/or ISO 17025, would be an asset.
  • Proven computer proficiency, including MS Office (Word, Excel).
